On 3 September 2026, the European Court of Human Rights closed 879 applications against Russia without deciding any of them. Anton Burkov, who represented applicants in nine of those cases and serves on the Human Rights Practice Program’s International Advisory Board, sets out what was lost for people seeking asylum in the United States, and what evidence remains.
