Human Rights and Sustainability in Schools

New course! Fully online – 7.5 weeks, Fall Session 1 (August 25-October 15, 2026)

This course discusses human rights, sustainability, and global citizenship education from the standpoint of creating K-12 classroom curricula.  Students will first familiarize themselves with the background and main theoretical frameworks of human rights, sustainability, and global citizenship. Then they will work in groups and with several K-12 teachers to design classroom projects around these topics.

 

The emphasis is on developing classroom-based projects that can be implemented in schools. Students will act as teachers who design their own course materials and will learn to conceptualize and think like educators. They will also assist educators who are already teaching in various locations in the US and implementing similar projects. The course will feature several guest speakers and at least one webinar with various activists and practitioners from around the world.  

 

Join this course offered by the University of Arizona’s Program in Human Rights Practice. This course has no pre-requisites and is open to all UA undergraduate and graduate students from AZ Online and Main Campus.
