"Who gets remembered? Whose stories get to be told?" With a deep interest in the collective memory of oppressed minorities, these questions continue to drive scholar and HRTS Instructor Aviva Doery, a Master's graduate in Human Rights Practice. Aviva teaches HRTS 305 Human Rights Stories: Genocide Through Film, Literature & Art which explores the blurred identities of victim, perpetrator, and bystander in genocidal spaces through various forms of storytelling.
The great-granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor, Aviva has embraced her passion for Holocaust and Genocide Studies throughout her academic career. At Pennsylvania State University Schreyer Honors College, Aviva conducted independent research on the lives of lesbians in Berlin before and during WWII at the United States Holocaust Museum and abroad at many Holocaust memorials and museums in Berlin. She completed a master’s degree in Human Rights Practice focusing on systems of oppression, collective memory, and intersectional identities. For her capstone project, Aviva created a minor in Human Rights in Action for the W.A. Franke Honors College.
Aviva is now pursuing her PhD in Higher Education at the University of Arizona Center for the Study of Higher Education. Her research focuses on virtual reality pedagogy, asking questions about ethics and human rights in innovative digital spaces.
