HRTS Alum Profile: Sarah Nassiwa
"When I was a little girl, I loved education. But most of the children in my village were denied an education. I wanted to help. I joined the Human Rights Practice Program so that I can fully understand the laws to protect human rights and to help the voiceless, especially the children."
Meet Human Rights Practice Program alum Sarah Nassiwa, from Katakala, Uganda. Sarah conducted the Capstone Project for her master’s degree supporting the Maranatha Integrated Schools Project (MISP) in the Mityana District of Uganda. Founded in 1998 by Rev. Patrick Walusimbi and his wife, Mrs. Eva Walusimbi, MISP began as an outdoor school for orphans and underprivileged children, focusing on educating girls. MISP now has five schools in the Mityana District.
Sarah has implemented a complex marketing strategy to foster the expansion of the project. She created a website, added social media platforms, helped design a business model with long-term goals, and facilitated student exchange programs with school districts in the United States, that, during Covid-19, use video conferencing technology.
Sarah also volunteered for Love Without Boundaries, an NGO working with children in Uganda, China, India, and Cambodia. Sarah says: "My passion has always been fighting for children, speaking up for them, and showing them that their human rights matter as much as adults." We are grateful Sarah Nassiwa enrolled in Human Rights Practice, and we know she will accomplish a great deal for children in what we hope is a long career!
